If the contractor walks in and tells me that he's going to charge me $800-1200 to do a Manual J on my house, what should I have told him?

Have a salesman where I work that will only bid on replacing with same size or 100$ to see the heat load before the bids accepted got sick of sizing stuff for other companies. never fails to amaze me that the most important part of the job is expected to be done for nothing.

I can understand charging for the heat loss/load calculations but not 800 to 1200 hundred bucks.
